The first-generation 208, developed under the code name "A9,"is constructed on the PSA PF1 platform. The vehicle was given a facelift in 2017. The 208 was designed by a team under the direction of Pierre Authier who also designed the Peugeot 2008 Mk1.

Pre-facelift models were usually fitted with the SMEG infotainment system but some models were fitted with a single DIN head unit. Facelift models were on the NAC infotainment system.
