The second generation of the Boxster debuted at the 2004 Paris Motor Show with the (997) 911 and became available for sale in 2005. The base Cayman followed in July 2006. Both the Cayman and second generation Boxster roadster share their mid-engine platform and many components, including the front wings and boot lid, doors, headlights, taillights, and forward portion of the interior.

The vehicles were fitted with either the CDR24 or PCM2.1 system. Both were available with standard audio or Bose audio packages.
