Like contemporary Subaru models, the fifth-generation model moved the Forester to the Subaru Global Platform. The vehicle had a facelift in 2021. All Forester models have Subaru's updated fourth-generation eyesight driver-assist system. 

Thrown into the mix, Subaru introduced the e-Boxer hybrid powertrain for the European-market Forester and XV at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.
